Christobal Balenciaga was born in Guetaria, Spain (21.01.1895) and died in Valencia, Spain (24.03.1972). His life can be compared to a fairy tale. At the age of 13, Christobal drew a picture of a dress for a wealthy women named “Marquesa de Casa Torres”. She liked his picture and gave him the permission to sew a copy of this haute-couture dress. And that’s how it all started. Christobal had found a sponsor and supporter in the Marquesa and learned to become a dressmaker. She helped him to open his first shop in San Sebanstian, Spain and it did not take long until the next shops were opened in Madrid and Barcelona (Spain). His first boutique in Paris was opened in 1937 and he expanded his fashion line by his own perfume creation “Le Dix”. Christobal Balenciaga never forgot where he came from and in all his modern fashion desings remained a part of Spanish tradition. Balenciaga ingetrated the inspiration he got from the well-known Spanish painters like Velasquez and Goya into his designs. It’s that special touch that made his style so famous and popular. The spirit of Christobal Balenciaga lives on in his fashion and in his unforgettable style. Today the fashion line Balenciaga is managed by the chief-designer Nicolas Ghesquiere. Queens of the Royal House of Spain wore and still wear Balenciaga.
